If you logon to microsoft account, it lists all the email addresses and calls them alias. How many mail accounts/email addresses are listed ? Is the problem hotmail email address set up as 'primary'?

That is only of use for an Work or school account. Not a personal account
I get the following message of MS "You can't sign in here with a personal account. Use your work or school account instead."

Yes that was the problem
I have 2 accounts ***@hotmail.com and ***@outlook.com. And outlook was set as Primary.
But all my microsoft settings are registered as Hotmail.com. ( now the hotmail is set as Primary ) I changed that several years back due to microsoft saying Hotmail will be deleted or something like that.

If you also have an *@outlook.com email address in Thunderbird as a mail account, then the incoming would use the outlook.com email address, but when sending it would need to send using the smtp for the hotmail account. However, to force any replies to come back to correct mail account. Advise is this - for the mail account with email address ending outlook.com, in Account Settings, set up a 'Reply-to Address' which says to reply to the outlook email address.
