Are you based in a country near there? I think you may have installed the Chinese version of Firefox for Android.

It will not be possible to install the .xpi file directly into Firefox for Android.

Are you based in China? I believe that content blocking add-ons are not permitted in that jurisdiction due to local legislation.

You are right. That is indeed what had happened. The usual place I install apps from had installed a Chinese-modified version so I downloaded the Firefox .apk from the github instead. Thanks for the help.
