Stupid taskbar icon with red "unread" or "not downloaded" email indicator...?!?

Who's the genius who decided I wanted a red dot in my taskbar icon?

Who approved this idiocy?

What release did this come in? Why is it not in any release note(s)?

Where is the option to turn it off?

It not even work properly - the number shown is incorrect.

When did IE employees start working for Mozilla?

I could answer all those questions, but seriously it would take time I do not intend to expend. It is probably mentioned in the release notes as something like Various theme and interface improvements or some system integration generic as it is utilizing a newer feature of windows 10.

If you don't like it just turn it off, in preferences like I did. Seeing 99+ all the time was not helpful. Search for icon in preferences.

Or you could just disable badges in windows entirely as you obviously will not like it when other programs have them as well. https://www.thewindowsclub.com/show-badges-taskbar-buttons-windows-10

Don't know why it wasn't there the first time I looked, thanks.

I'm a Windows 7 Luddite, they will have to pry it from (well, you know the rest).

I went into preferences, searched for "icon" and unchecked two boxes, and the problem persists. I don't wish to "disable badges" in windows because if any other program IS indeed doing the thing, they're managing to do it in a non-annoying way.

Okay, I have now found a third box to uncheck. It seems like that worked. Thanks, @Matt.
