I'd like to prepare for the next Thunderbird release and I had a few questions:

  • When is the next ESR release? Regular release?
  • What will happen to Thunderbird extensions?
  • How can I change update channels to stay on ESR?

Hi,

Thunderbird actually is following ESR schema. So the next big release will be version 60 after May 1, 2018. Security ("dot") releases are every 6-8 weeks. So you don't have to change the release channel.

Thunderbird 57-59 and Seamonkey still support old add-ons if the appropriate modifications are done to adapt to the changed interfaces. In general, Thunderbird is adding WebExtension support (bug 1396172) while maintaining "legacy" add-ons and hybrid add-ons.

TyDraniu, thank you for providing such a well informed response!
