It might be looking for something that the server moved and it is now causing a log jam preventing other emails from being downloaded.
Loggon to webmail account using a browser and see if there are emails in the server 'Spam/Junk' folder - if yes, empty that folder, then retry to 'Get Messages' in Thunderbird.
