I think it sucks that I can not pick the color of a font on the fly

At one time with this mail program I could change the color of a word or line . Now I can't it continuously defaults back to BLACK even if the font color box shows the correct color UNTIL I start to type. Do I need to TOTALLY delete it and start over or is there a fix?

Mine works fine. There must be another reason
