Why have i stopped being able to have mutiple tabs open on the same page?
i used to be able to keep multiple tabs open and move from one to another now if i open a new one through any means the old page closes.

Firefox should still let you keep multiple tabs open. I’d tap the tab icon and check whether the old tab is still there. If it is, it may just be switching to the new tab rather than closing the old one.
If you’re on Android, also check Settings → Tabs → Close tabs and make sure it’s set to Never.
