I'm running Windows 8.1 64bit, and a 64bit install of Firefox

Without exception, any time I try to update Firefox or close the program, it balloons its resource usage and then crashes.

Every. Single. Time.

I have submitted several crash reports over the years. What is happening and how do I stop it?

Also, why does it clear my clipboard? I Ctrl-C'd a url before closing it just now, and after it crashed and a restarted it, Ctrl-V was empty.

The places.sqlite file contains your History and Bookmarks. And it looks like it is corrupted.

Type about:support<enter> in the address bar.

Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To its right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Locate the above file. Then rename or delete it. Restart Firefox. The browser should then create a new place.sqlite and recover your bookmarks from the backup files.

Note: Your history is not backed up and will be lost.

Perhaps it's bug 1588498. This is a difficult bug to analyze, although devs are still working o it.

Also these four from various dates that I submitted today. You may have noticed I've taken to not bothering to update often, because I know it's just going to crash. Indeed, I have 6 more crash reports that failed to submit at all after multiple attempts.

Try to enter about:support in the URL bar, scroll down to the Places database and click the Check integrity button. This would produce a log, paste it here.

Okay, did that, and Firefox loaded back up quickly. Immediately closed it, and it ballooned up to 20% CPU and 1.2GB of RAM over about 20-30 seconds, but did eventually close without crashing. It did mess about with webappsstore.sqlite and its related files during this process.

I feel like it still shouldn't be ballooning resources like this, and indeed it often gets up to several GB of RAM after I've opened, used, and closed enough tabs, especially if I'm using the developer console tools - I basically only restart Firefox when I'm tired of all the memory it's leaked. Could all of this be related, and there be another step to finish off the job?

I ran Verify Integrity again, in case it helps:

It looks OK now. Hopefully it won't crash anymore.

Firefox 93 brings memory improvements in DevTools, especially on long debugging sessions (almost 50% less memory leaks). And this is only the beginning, 94 (in Beta right now), shows even better numbers (~85% less leaks than 92).

So does that mean that it's supposed to get up to 20% CPU and 1.2GB on shutdown for several seconds? That seems ...odd, to me.

A lot of things is happening on shutdown under the hood, 1.2GB is not very spectacular number.
