For example, when talking to a customer service person on a website, and the chat pane is minimized while you are working on another site. I never know when they reply back. IE makes a tone to let you know.

That would be a question for "help" or "support" for whatever program or website you are using for "chat".

"Chat" isn't a default feature in Firefox.
