If properly uninstalled, the plugins for Adobe Reader and Foxit Reader should have also been uninstalled in the process.
Be careful with the Windows registry unless you know what you are doing.
- Always backup the registry to another source; not the current hard drive.
- Use a program that will offer to back up the registry keys that you are deleting.
- Always have a bootable disk of some kind (CD/DVD, USB drive) just in case you make a mistake.
You can use Windows search to locate the plugin files and delete them if they are on your hard drive and leave the registry alone. Locate and delete the following files while Firefox is completely closed. After deleting the files, start Firefox, look at your plugins, Add-ons > Plugins, to see if the two plugins are gone.
- Adobe Reader plugin name: nppdf32.dll
- Foxit Reader plugin name: npFoxitReaderPlugin.dll

You can manually remove those; they were not properly cleaned up by Java when updating. See:
In your case, remove folders:

You need to update the following:
- Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape
- Check your plugin versions on either of the following links':
- https://www-trunk.stage.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/
- Note: plugin check page does not have information on all plugin versions
- There are plugin specific testing links available from this page:
- Update Adobe Reader (PDF plugin):
- From within your existing Adobe Reader (if you have it already installed):
- Open the Adobe Reader program from your Programs list
- Click Help > Check for Updates
- Follow the prompts for updating
- If this method works for you, skip the "Download complete installer" section below and proceed to "After the installation" below
- Download complete installer (if you do NOT have Adobe Reader installed):
- SAVE the installer to your hard drive (save to your Desktop so that you can find it after the download). Exit/Close Firefox. Run the installer you just downloaded.
- Use either of the links below:
- https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Using+the+Adobe+Reader+plugin+with+Firefox (click on "Installing and updating Adobe Reader")
- Also see Download link': http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/

Thanks,I will delete the java files as you suggested. But do I need to install adobe reader just for the plugin update?I use Nuance PDF reader and it works perfectly well with Firefox,I dont like adobe reader!Cant I just disable the adobe reader plugin as I dont have the reader instaled on my laptop?
"I use Nuance PDF reader and it works perfectly well..."
If you prefer another reader for PDF files, then use it.
"But do I need to install adobe reader just for the plugin update?"
"I dont like adobe reader!Cant I just disable the adobe reader plugin as I dont have the reader instaled on my laptop?"
The system you used to post your question, has Adobe Reader installed, as well as Foxit Reader (click on "More system info...." to the right of your original question to see the installed plugins reported with your question).
- I made the suggestion regarding updating Adobe Reader based on the fact that it is installed, and appears to be an out of date version, on the system that you used to post your question.
- I only have Foxit Reader installed on my system. Why would you need more that one PDF Reader installed?
- If your laptop is the one that you used to post your original question, you could
- un-install Adobe Reader and Foxit Reader and use only the Nuance PDF Reader.
- Less security risk and less to update.
- Less hard drive space used by applications that do the same thing.
I did have adobe reader on this machine,it was preinstalled when I got it but I uninstalled it as I wanted to try Foxit reader.Inthe end I settled onNuance and uninstalled the foxit reader.I guess the plugins were left behind,it was before I discovered Revo uninstaller and I just used windows own uninstaller.I managed to find two files called foxit plugins and deleted them but nothing seems to be named adobe plugin and I am nervous of deleting the wrong registry files.Do you know what I should be looking for?
