Frequently when I have an active dest top, and I try to open Firefox I get this" "Close Firefox"

Firefox is already running, but it is not responding. To open a new window,you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system."

When this happens Firefox is inactive (closed). I can not reopen Firefox from the present desk top, and must reboot my computer.

I have Firefox 3.6, Win XP Home.
This used to happen a few times a month, and I could live with it, but it is occurring much more frequently now.
Please advise.
