Highlighting messages by moving arrow up and down

I used to be able to highlight messages on the list of messages by moving up and down arrows and all it took was 1 click of each arrow.

Now it's different, I can only use up and down arrows if message is already highlighted and in order to highlight I have to click on it with mouse.

Is there a way to return how it was before?
