I have windows 7 professional on my laptop and was able to upgrade 52.9 with 60 - without issue. I have the same avast a/v on both systems.

Your useragent in More System Details appears to be Firefox 52 on Windows XP. Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; WOW64; rv:52.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/52.0
Two possibilities. Either you have been running Firefox in Windows XP compatibility mode for some time or you have modified the useragent. The NT 5.1 is for XP.
Could you turn off any compatibility settings on your Firefox shortcut?
To do that, find the icon you use the start Firefox, and either:
- Right-click a desktop shortcut, then click Properties
- Right-click a Firefox icon pinned to the Taskbar then right-click Mozilla Firefox, then click Properties
You should clear all the boxes on the Compatibility tab for best results (giant screenshot below).
Any difference the next time you start Firefox? (credits to jscher2000 for above part).
Or you have a modified useragent for some reason. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-reset-default-user-agent-firefox

You are on XP now. You have VMware installed and running on that other system ? That could be the issue but is most likely your Avast.
There is security software like Avast/AVG, Kaspersky, BitDefender and ESET that intercept secure connections and send their own certificate/or it is one of their scanners that is causing issues. If you are running any of the above software please check their community forum for a work around to apply settings.

Note after you fix the useragent you should download the current Firefox 62.0 Release from www.mozilla.org/firefox/all as a Update will serve you 60.2.0 ESR instead.

All due respect, If i were running windows XP I would not have said I was running Windows 7 Ultimate.
Your response, while likely well intended, was nothing but red herrings. _regards.

Ok that was a weird solution - but very accurate. THANKS! I would never have found that.
I must have set the windows XP compat mode years ago on the startup icon. Also weird that simply unchecking it was insufficient but I had to restart FF "before running the install program".
rhetorical question: why would the 62 install program care what mode a current instance of FF is running under? That seems very counter intuitive. Why not ask the OS what version it is, rather than asking a running copy of FF that could be running in a deceptive compatibly mode.
(yes pkshadow I did mistype 60 instead of 62 in my question)
Now if FF developers would bring back the classic toolbar buttons that I've been using since shortly after time began - after they discovered dirt and before they named it dirt.
I know it's off topic for this thread.. but I figured I'd vent somewhere.. I put off upgrading because I knew it would deprecate classic-theme-restorer addon.
I found a couple hacks to the .css file that let me round the tabs and put them back under the URL tool bar... so it's closer but still not what my old eyes expect to see.
I want my TEXT buttons back!! I don't think in pictures and I resent being forced into that box.
Thanks again James.

Geez, this version of FF uses 3x the amount of RAM the old version used.
