Cannot add account in thunderbird
I could't figure out how to add on to the original post on this issue, so I am using the same question and am hoping Matt picks it up.
The basic problem is that the "Add Mail Account ..." dialog box does not open.
Info: Windows 8.0 (not upgraded to 8.1) 64 bit Core i7 3630QM
I have worked in IT for 20 years, so I am reasonably adept at installing and configuring software.
There are 2 WINDOWS users configured (Call them "C" and "M"). "C" was the original user and can use Thunderbird.
The problem is with the "M" user.
As the "M" user I downloaded and installed he latest version of Thunderbird (31.2.0). After running, the wizard did not ask to setup any kind of account (I assumed, because the "C" user already had one), so I tried to manually create one.
I activated the "Tools" menu using the 3 horizontal bars next to the search bar. Using the "Tools" menu I selected "Account Settings" to open the "Account Settings" Window. In the "Account Settings" window I select "Account Actions"->"Add Mail Account..." and NOTHING happens (No other dialog window appears). WEIRD??
So, I tried the other options "Account Actions"->"Add Chat...","Add Feed...","Add Other". They all open another dialog window (as expected). "Set as Default" and "Remove Account" are both greyed out (As expected, since no account has been setup).
Just for reference, the "Add Mail Account" option is selectable - i.e. it is NOT greyed out, so it should work. I also made sure that I was not in full screen mode and moved the windows around to ensure that the "Add Mail Account" dialog window was not opening in the background.
I did some googling and found some other suggestions and tried them.
I ran "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe -safe-mode" and the results to the above testing were the same - only the "Add Mail Account" dialog window didn't appear.
I ran "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe -p" and created a new profile "Test" and the results to the testing using the new "Test" profile was the same.
Did some more googling and did the following:
Added:
user_pref("browser.dom.window.dump.enabled", true);
to my
C:\Users\Mark\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\2k7cp4pm.default\prefs file.
and ran
C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe -console
The output is as follows:

At this point I don't know what to do next
Help!

Another route to try:
AppMenu|New Message|Existing Mail Account
(I don't know why so many options are hidden beneath "New Message"!)
I'm not too optimistic, since I don't think you have trouble getting to the entry point; it's what happens (or doesn't) thereafter where it goes astray.
PS there is no record of a previous query from you here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/search?a=1&asked_by=markb8&sortby=1&w=2
Have you set up a second account on this site?

Thanks Zenos,
I ran TB with -console and tried the: File->New->Get a new Mail Account followed by File->New->Existing Mail Account
The console displays the following errors: JavaScript error: chrome://messenger/content/accountUtils.js, line 342: NS_ERROR _FAILURE: Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [nsIMsg MailSession.topmostMsgWindow] JavaScript error: chrome://messenger/content/mail3PaneWindowCommands.js, line 10 82: gFolderDisplay is null JavaScript error: chrome://messenger/content/mailWindowOverlay.js, line 101: gFo lderDisplay is null JavaScript error: chrome://messenger/content/mailWindowOverlay.js, line 101: gFo lderDisplay is null JavaScript error: chrome://messenger/content/mailWindowOverlay.js, line 101: gFo lderDisplay is null JavaScript error: chrome://messenger/content/mailWindowOverlay.js, line 101: gFo lderDisplay is null JavaScript error: chrome://messenger/content/mailWindowOverlay.js, line 101: gFo lderDisplay is null JavaScript error: chrome://messenger/content/mailWindowOverlay.js, line 101: gFo lderDisplay is null JavaScript error: chrome://messenger/content/mailWindowOverlay.js, line 101: gFo lderDisplay is null JavaScript error: chrome://messenger/content/mailWindowOverlay.js, line 101: gFo lderDisplay is null JavaScript error: chrome://messenger/content/accountUtils.js, line 308: NewMailA ccount must be given a msgWindow.
No, I don't have a 2nd account. I was searching in Mozilla Support and another user had the same problem (Matt was trying to help). Since my problem is likely the same I wanted to add my testing results. At that point I hadn't signed up as a contributor.
[ Now I can't even find the other users original post. I tried searching with quotes around the string or with + signs in front of the words. No luck - WAY to may results for me to manually flip through. Is there a way to make a search "AND" the words together as opposed to ORing them? ]

I don't know what to make of those error messages.
In your position, knowing that Thunderbird is misbehaving, I'd be tempted to download and re-install. However, given that your 'C' user login is working, it would seem that your Thunderbird executable is OK. That moves the suspicion to your 'M' user's Thunderbird profile.
Would it be horribly inconvenient to delete (or move or rename) the existing 'M' profile folder and start over? Profile corruption can lead to various nasty problems in Thunderbird. :-(
And, no, I can't help with the search utility. It's recognized as being weak and in need of rework.
Thankfully, deleting and reinstalling for "M" (Me) is not a problem. If fact, I started with a fresh install, so there is nothing for me to save.
Remember, I am running as a 2nd WINDOWS user, not as a 2nd profile in the Thunderbird instance.
So, what I did was rename the: C:\Users\Mark\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird folder.
I restarted TB and the problem persists. It did create a new C:\Users\Mark\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird folder and it seems to be populated with the appropriate files, including a new C:\Users\Mark\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\m2hfhbnd.default file.
It doesn't seem to be a corrupt TB profile file.

"Remember, I am running as a 2nd WINDOWS user, not as a 2nd profile in the Thunderbird instance."
Understood. (But a second user account in the OS implies a second TB profile.)
OK, is it worth trying a new install of Thunderbird? Since you have not seen a crash as such, we can't ask you for a crash id.
Did a bit more testing - created a "Test" Windows user (local) and ran TB. Works fine (didn't actually expect that).
Changed the "Test" users permissions to admin (like the problematic "M" user), renamed the Thunderbird folder in the Appdata/Roaming directory and started TB again - works fine again.
It seems that there is "something" wrong with "M's" particular windows user configuration. At this point I am going to create a 2nd windows user "Dad" and start installing some of the user programs that I have. Perhaps they overwrote something? This may take a while ....
Will try to update again tomorrow. Thanks for your help so far.
Mark
Zenos,
The testing/checking continues.
I spent the last few hours reinstalling the apps the "M" user uses onto the "Test" windows user, each time deleting the Thunderbird folder in the AppData\Roaming directory and restarting TB. As the TEST user, everything works correctly. I no longer think that another application overwriting a shared file or shared library or a registry entry is the problem.
I did notice that when I start TB as the TEST user, the Wizard starts and asks me to create an email account ...., as the "M" user the Wizard does not start.
I also noticed that as the "TEST" windows user that the TB window is "inside" a tabbed folder called "Home". Using the "M" windows user, the tab exists, but there is no name - It does NOT say Home - it is completely blank. When I left click on the space where it is supposed to say Home, I get a horizontal line. I think this indicates that the field is empty or null.
Perhaps the Mail window and first time wizard doesn't run because I don't have a "Home" folder??
What is needed to "create" the home folder?
Your thoughts and further suggestions appreciated.
Mark
More Info: Hope it isn't getting too much.
It seems that some of the other windows don't open using the "M" windows account.
As the "M" user I ran: C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe -safe-mode -console
I tried to get the Help->Troubleshooting Information. No window opens and the console responds with: Error: No such tab mode: contentTab -- Exception object --
-- Stack Trace -- openTab@chrome://messenger/content/tabmail.xml:460:13 AboutSupportOverlay_openInNewTab@chrome://messenger/content/about-support/overla y.js:10:22 oncommand@chrome://messenger/content/messenger.xul:1:1
Similarly if I select Tools->Add-ons I don't get another window and I do get another message in the console: Error: No such tab mode: contentTab -- Exception object --
-- Stack Trace -- openTab@chrome://messenger/content/tabmail.xml:460:13 openTab@chrome://communicator/content/utilityOverlay.js:205:7 openContentTab@chrome://communicator/content/utilityOverlay.js:233:44 openAddonsMgr@chrome://messenger/content/mailCore.js:446:3 oncommand@chrome://messenger/content/messenger.xul:1:1
It really seems that there is some kind of global problem. The Add mail account window not opening is just one of the downstream problems.
With this in mind I checked the Windows environment variables for both "M" and "TEST" users. They were identical (with M and Test differences as appropriate).
Hope the additional information is helpful.
If you like I can post the Troubleshooting information from the working "Test" account.
