What are remote improvements?

Remote improvements range from fixes to feature changes to Firefox. They are delivered remotely between versions and updates to make your browsing experience stabler and richer, and they are completely optional based on your preferences. If you opt into remote improvements, you can have Firefox automatically install these changes for you.

Previously, access to these changes required you to share your technical and interaction data (telemetry) with Mozilla. However, as of Firefox 148, you can opt into receiving remote improvements, even if you have opted out of sharing your telemetry or participating in our experimental studies.

Note: We are sharing our remote improvements with more Firefox users, which will no longer require you to share any data if you don’t wish to.

How can I opt out?

Please note the following defaults:

Remote improvements will be toggled ON by default unless you have deliberately opted out of Install and run studies in Settings prior to Firefox 148.

If you have deliberately opted out of Install and run studies in Settings prior to Firefox 148, remote improvements will be toggled OFF by default.

Depending on your preferences, you will be able to turn remote improvements on/off whenever you want in Settings.

If you prefer not to receive remote improvements, you can opt out by adjusting your settings on Desktop, Android, or iOS. Follow the steps below based on your platform:

Firefox

  1. Open Firefox and tap the menu button ≡ on the browser toolbar.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Scroll to the Privacy section and select Firefox Data Collection and Use.
  4. Uncheck the Allow Firefox to improve features, performance, and stability between updates checkbox to opt out of automatically getting browser changes between Firefox updates.

What happens if I disable this option?

If you disable the Remote Improvements setting:

  • Firefox will stop automatically downloading remote fixes and feature changes.
  • However, you will still get our regular monthly updates even if Remote Improvements is disabled.

Since remote improvements are now separate from data collection, any changes made to this setting will not affect data collection settings, such as crash reports or technical telemetry. You will only change whether or not you receive automatic fixes or feature improvements between Firefox versions.
