Thunderbird is an e-mail client. It sends and receives messages to and from accounts that exist at e-mail service providers. Google is the provider of gmail accounts. Spectrum provides accounts to Spectrum customers. Mozilla and Thunderbird do not provide accounts.

You access e-mail accounts from Thunderbird by entering information about those accounts in Thunderbird, as you started (finished?) to do with your gmail account. If you want to use your Spectrum account in Thunderbird, you must go through that process with the settings for your Spectrum account.

When you asked Spectrum about server settings for *Thunderbird*, apparently you all thought of Thunderbird as a third-party account. It is not that. Spectrum should be able to help if you ask them for *Spectrum’s* server settings. But David posted them above so you don’t have to.

If you have a Spectrum account, do you have the e-mail address and password for it? With that information, you can start setting up your Spectrum account (not a Thunderbird account) in Thunderbird.

You do not need twc.com. David provided the link to Spectrum’s web mail. Can you use that link and log in to your Spectrum e-mail account?

If you can, then we will know that you have a working Spectrum account and we can help you set it up in Thunderbird, using the settings that David has provided.

Okay, puzzling. Everywhere I look, those are the right settings, although I do know, according to that URL I shared, that servers vary, depending on the Spectrum account. Others here may have better info. and maybe Spectrum support can assist.

I contacted Spectrum and they said they don't support any third party email accounts. Currently I use gmail but don't like it. I used TB for many years and love the arrangement of everything . What if I delete my accounts and start from the beginning and see where I get tripped up. I tend to think the problem is with the password. Am I correct in saying I have to begin with my gmail account and then add a new TB account

I share your frustration. Spectrum provides the servers, but with no support. Spectrum users are frequently on the forum here. The Spectrum account is independent of Gmail. I will see if I can locate someone with more expertise on TWC.

I appreciate all your assistance. I am currently viewing the TB page which shows my account as dejones71@gmail.com. I am going to add a new account see attached. Am I going in the right direction now

First, as soon as you can, possibly online, CHANGE your twc.com password, as it's in public view. If you can do that, do it now. Second, for gmail, just enter name and full email address, nothing more. Thunderbird will configure automatically for you.

I am assuming there is a website where you can log onto the account. I think this may be it:

Could a simple misunderstanding be interfering?

There is no such thing as a Thunderbird e-mail account.

Why did you talk with Spectrum about a third-party account? What account did you discuss?

To use Thunderbird, you must have an e-mail account with a service provider.

Do you have an e-mail account at twc.com or another Spectrum domain? Can you log in to that account over the Web?

Why do you relate any of this to gmail? If you have an e-mail account with Google, do you really want another one at TWC or Spectrum?

You can set up any or all of your gmail, TWC, and Spectrum accounts in Thunderbird. Which accounts do you have? Which do you want in Thunderbird?

Why do you say there is no thunderbird accounts when the internet is filled with information on how to set one up? I sought support from Spectrum to see if they new what the server settings were for TB. When I select twc.com I get this message Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead

Firefox detected a potential security threat and did not continue to twc.com. If you visit this site, attackers could try to steal information like your passwords, emails, or credit card details.

What can you do about it?

The issue is most likely with the website, and there is nothing you can do to resolve it. You can notify the website’s administrator about the problem. When I open Thunderbird my gmail account is displayed. Yes, I have gmail and dislike it. I had a thunderbird email account for many years and love the structure of the entire page. When I moved a couple of years ago I lost my TB account because I canceled Spectrum. I now have Spectrum again so I want to have a TB account again.

Where were you 20 years ago when I had so much trouble obtaining this information from Mozilla Support. You presented the information just the way I like to receive it. I don't like to be told to push this and that button and I will get what I want. I want to have a basic understanding of the email structure so I can figure out my own problems if they occur. At 85 yrs old my mind doesn't function the way it used to so I need a lot of guidance. When I first started using TB I gained respect for the way it was structured. I seem to remember that when I got new mail it all wasn't bunched together but went to assigned boxes under the Inbox. I recall being able to save all my emails under a persons name. I didn't have Spectrum when I started using TB. I remember Time Warner, Roadrunner and Charter Net before Spectrum stepped in. My email address for many years was dejones7@twc.com so if that email account gave me what I liked I want to go back to it. I want Thunderbird to be my client. Does that make sense? I called Spectrum and they said I do not have spectrum email and I can no longer get it. They are not offering any email to new customers. What do I do now?

I'm glad that my response was helpful. Thanks for telling me.

The only way to get a twc.com e-mail address is to buy the domain from Spectrum.  :)

So you will have to get an account somewhere else. The common places are Google (gmail), Microsoft, Apple, internet service providers (not an option for you because Spectrum is getting out of the e-mail business), et al. I discourage people from using all Google products because Google exists to invade privacy, collect data, and exploit people and their data. It is an illegal monopolist in at least one industry and maybe one or two others. If you don't mind that and you have a Google account (not clear from your post above) or you get one, you can set up your gmail account in Thunderbird. Directions from Google are here: https://support.google.com/a/answer/9003945?hl=en

When you have questions specific to Thunderbird, people here can help you.

Because I value privacy and I do not like being exploited, I recommend fastmail.com. It costs $5 per month but respects privacy and has many valuable features (that you might not use). Signing up for an account is easy. You will have to get a special (app-specific) password from Fastmail and use that, not your Fastmail account password, in Thunderbird. (This is not uncommon. Apple and AT&T have the same requirement.)

Wherever you get an account, setting it up in Thunderbird is fairly easy, and people here can help.

Then we can help you configure the layout so Thunderbird works the way you want it to.
