removing US language add-on

The advice managing add-ons is to go to about:addons and choose the addon to remove. But the US language addon is not listed. Whenever I install the UK language addon, it is removed and replaced by the US one at the next "improvement" of Firefox.

How can I set the options so the US language and dictionary are never again downloaded, installed, then made the default environment?

I think you are talking about language packs.

Type about:preferences#content<enter> in the address bar.

On the bottom of the page, find Languages. To its right, press the Choose button. Make sure the correct language and district are selected.

Thank you. But not quite. If I follow your advice, there is only the UK language pack shown as an option. However, when I go to some editable content on a website, right click>Languages This shows 2 languages UK English and US English.

So the US English is still installed in the background. Some pages or Firefox updates seem to revert to US language addon default. And I am never told until the spell checkers shows my spelling is wrong.

How do I clear it out - permanently with no chance of it wriggling back in, virus-like?

Did you installed the English (British) version?

The language Packs are for changing the language of the User Interface or UI of Fireox and nothing to do with websites.

It sounds like you have the en-US Firefox installed and then installed the en-GB language pack.

Thank you

The en-US pack was presumably installed as part of the automatic updating of Firefox. I do not recall ever being offered the option of choosing between the US and a UK version of Firefox. I have had to re-install the en-UK pack a number of times, I think after Firefox was re-updated.

My question is- How do I remove the en-US language/ dictionary pack option, permanently? There does not seem to be an option to remove it even temporarily in the manage:addon page. The only option available is to remove the en-UK pack.

As I stated you likely installed the en-US Firefox and not en-GB as you can see there are separate locales at www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

The language packs are an option for to have one install of Firefox but be able change the language of the UI as in the Menus and such to another language instead of having multiple Firefox installs. The Dictionaries are for the spell checker in Firefox.

Thank you. I did not know there was a en-GB version of Firefox. With any luck, installing that should solve the problem.

It would be useful if the option of installing different language versions of Firefox was at least mentioned on the Options page, preferably enabled as an option.

Hello cvhorie,

TyDraniu gave you a link to that version earlier .....

Would you therefore be so kind as to mark his post as Chosen Solution instead of your own  ?
