I use gContactSync but it only synchs down to my address book, not up to my Google account

Thanks for that. I found 37 contacts that were in fact in Google but not in My Contacts. I had to search for each one individually and add it to My Contacts. Things are now good. Thanks again.

gContactSync does sync in both directions. I'd suggest to read the FAQ on the extension web site. Did you try to search a 'missing' contact in Google Contacts?
