The most recent update of QuickBooks 2015 (R8) does not support Thunderbird. After many hours on the phone with Intuit tech support, I finally spoke to someone in the IT department who told me that the reason for this was due to a lack of communication and/or cooperation with Mozilla. I have over 10 years of email in Thunderbird and the thought of switching to Outlook so that I can use my accounting software as needed is troubling. Please tell me that Mozilla is working with Intuit to address this issue.

Lets try an put this into perspective.

1. Mozilla do not make Thunderbird.. The Thunderbird council does.

2. Intuit have a very long history of very bad programming techniques in their products. It took them some 10 years to get the gist of using program files to install programs and adhere to windows basic security. Huge security headaches caused by that decade of failure on their part. I mention this not to trow stones, Thunderbird support for MAPI has been patchy over the years, but to point out those instructing are not all that good at what they do.

3. Quickbooks uses MAPI to send mail. Unfortunately there are two kinds Simple MAPI that Thunderbird and most Windows mail applications use and Extended MAPI that is basically the proprietary interface that Outlook uses. Intuit does not appear to be able to make up it's mind which their product supports. They don't even appear to be aware the protocol has more than one flavor.

4. Microsoft are standing further and further away from MAPI support.. They no longer include it in their Exchange product and you have to install one of their mail clients to have the basic libraries installed at all.

5. There appears to be some sort of issue with MAPI on 64bit computers unless all the software, Quickbooks and Thunderbird are 64bit. I do not understand it., all I know is I can not get MAPI to work on my 65bit machine.

So basically I have no answer for you, other than whom ever you spoke to at Intuit appears to be making things up. You would think that they would be able to get an arrangement going with Mozilla, at least enough to know the management changfed years ago. Their offices are but 10 minutes apart.

That is a question for intuit, not us.

The original poster here spoke to someone who appeared to by under the misapprehension Thunderbird was a Mozilla product. So it is unlikely that they will get much done talking to the wrong people.

But your giving them money to provide a product that does not meet your needs. I suggest you ask those you pay why they fail to deliver,. If they blame Mozilla, see what they have to say about the fact it is not a Mozillla product. Bet they just change name and keep passing the buck. The problem is Quickbook, and it's reliance on deprecated Microsoft technologies.

Basically Quickbooks is poorly written software that two decades after windows 95 arrived still requires you to run as an administrator. I am not sure if it is laziness, stupidity or them relying on folk being "stuck" with their software because of their accounting firm. Most line of business software is also in the same category. Poorly written and tested. It might be good tax software. I have no idea. I just know it is rubbish for any system administrator that has concerns about system security and the support you pay for is anything but.
