I want a new window to open when I click the Firefox icon on the taskbar. I don't want to have to right click, then choose "open new window". I have Windows 7.

This is a "pinned" icon? Try holding the Shift key when you click it -- that seems to work for me.

that did the trick...thanks! Would still like to be able to just click without shifting, etc...I used to be able to do that with Windows XP but can't seem to figure it out with Windows 7. Or is that a Firefox thing, not MS?

I think it's because Windows 7 combined the QuickLaunch into the Task Bar. There might be some way to get the classic QuickLaunch back but I haven't dug into it.
