I have passwords saved, by Firefox and by me, but when on the website the password is not automatically inserted.

I could not get Password Manager to ask me if I wanted it to save ids and passwords when logging onto a website. After searching FF help information I found an "add-on" to allow me to record them myself, which I have done. However, when I now log on to websites that I (or FF) have recorded the id and password, it is not automatically inserted. I have to type both the id and password in to enter the site. When I check to make sure the id and password is recorded in my Password Manager, it is there. How do I get Password Manager to insert these ids and passwords in automatically? To make it a bit more confusing, I still, at times, get the prompt asking if I want FF to record an id/password when going onto a new website. I say "yes" but it still won't insert the id or pw when I reenter the site.

Do you a drop down list with choices if you press the Down key or type the first letter(s) of the name?

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode.

To see all History and Cookie settings, choose:

  • Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use private browsing mode"

Thanks for your reply/help! I do not get a drop down message if I press the Down key while on the website and I get nothing if I type the first letter of my id in the required box. I've also checked to be sure I'm not in Private Browsing. I'm also good regarding the proper settings for History, etc that you've outlined. What I find very confusing is that Password Manager seems to work on some of the websites I go to, and at times it pops up and asks me if I want to save the id and pw on some new sites I visit. So I'm convinced that only some small tweak or adjustment is needed to make this go all of the time... but maybe not. I even downloaded the Daniel Dawson "Saved Password Editor 2.2.6" add-on to allow me to enter id/pw on my own, which seems to keep every entry I make, but they too do not provide the id/pw when I enter those sites. I was frustrated with Roboform not working properly for me so I decided to let FF do the id/pw remembering for me... but maybe I just need to go back to Roboform and live with the frustration?

Websites may be using autocomplete=off to prevent Firefox from saving the name and password and Firefox also won't autofill the name and password in that case. Some websites also use JavaScript to generate the input form and the password manager doesn't work in such a case as well although you can still use the Saved Password Editor extension to force saving passwords in both cases.

You can remove autocomplete=off with a bookmarklet to make Firefox save the name and password.
