Affected feature: ChatGPT Read Aloud
Subject: Firefox 157.0.1 – ChatGPT Read Aloud Not Working (“Unable to read aloud”)
Hello Mozilla Firefox Support Team,
I am reporting a problem with Firefox 157.0.1 on Windows involving ChatGPT's Read Aloud feature.
Until approximately one week ago, I could use ChatGPT's Read Aloud feature without any problems. Now, whenever I try to listen to a written ChatGPT response, Firefox displays the following error:
“Unable to read aloud.”
I have confirmed that this problem is specific to Firefox. ChatGPT's Read Aloud feature works perfectly in Google Chrome on the same computer. Additionally, YouTube and other audio applications work normally in Firefox.
Troubleshooting already completed:
Cleared ChatGPT's cookies and website data.
Disabled Firefox Enhanced Tracking Protection for ChatGPT.
Restarted Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode with extensions disabled.
Refreshed ChatGPT and restarted the browser.
Tested ChatGPT Read Aloud in Google Chrome, where it works correctly.
Unfortunately, none of these troubleshooting steps resolved the problem in Firefox.
System information:
Browser: Mozilla Firefox 157.0.1
Operating system: Windows
Website: https://chatgpt.com
Affected feature: ChatGPT Read Aloud
Error: “Unable to read aloud”
I understand that other Firefox 157 users have reported similar problems.
Could your technical team investigate whether a recent Firefox update or browser compatibility issue is interfering with ChatGPT's Read Aloud functionality?
I prefer using Firefox as my primary browser and would appreciate any assistance or information about a possible fix.
Thank you for your assistance.

Hello,
You can try these fixes : First, go to about:config, accept the risk, (use at own discretion), search for media.mediasource.mp4.enabled and make sure it is set to true, and also search for media.wmf.enabled (windows) and check if it is true. Also, check if media.directshow.enabled is true too. After that, restart Firefox and try Read Aloud again.
Next, keep in mind that if you have Win10/11 Home/Pro N, you will have to install the Media Feature Pack to get it to work.
If that doesn't work, you can always use reader view with your installed native to the OS voice. To do this, look at the right-hand side of your Firefox address bar, and you will see an icon that looks like a small open book. Alternatively, you can just press the F9 key. After that, it will turn the text into a text document, then s small toolbar will appear on the left side of the screen. Click the Audio/Speaker icon. After that, press play.
