suddenly can't retrieve ATT Yahoo emails with Thunderbird after trying every suggestion
Using Thunderbird 115.18.0esr Supernova 64-bit on Mac laptop OS 10.13.6. Worked fine for years, with ongoing Thunderbird updates, even though Mac OS is 32-bit. Suddenly, after 10/6/26 can't retrieve emails although I can see them on the ATT Yahoo server website. Can still send emails with Thunderbird. Inbound server settings are: POP server inbound.att.net, Port 995, SSL/TLS, Normal Password (I long ago created a Secure Mail Key, and even tried creating a new one). But inbound server name doesn't show in Saved Passwords (only outbound server with Secure Mail Key as password)? I have tried everything suggested, repaired my inbox folder, updated Thunderbird files, etc. in Profile as recommended. But still no prompt for password when attempting to get messages. Just shows "Done" at bottom left with no new messages received. But new messages are seen on server website. So it appears that Thunderbird isn't able to connect to the ATT Yahoo server to get emails. Why? And what else can I do? I love Thunderbird and want to continue using it.

Like Raina, I am more interested in the missing pasword bit. And you did not actually say if there were any oAuth:\\ entries.
There used to be a way of forcing oauth with ATT, by manually entering the yahoo server names instead of the ATT ones, but I am unsure if that still works after the latest round of ATT changes. Some folk in the past found that changing the setting in Thunderbird for using DNS over HTTPS was also required as ATT used a poisoned DNS server to implement their arrangements with Yahoo. So you might want to try it with the DNS over HTTPS on and off, just to see if it makes a difference to you.
But I also think we need more detail.
Please open the Config Editor it might also hide behind an advanced settings button depending on Thunderbird version Change the setting mailnews.pop3.loglevel to All open the error console (ctrl+Shift+J) (sorry but I don't know the translation of mac) Clear it to get of of existing junk. Try to fetch you mail
What appears in the console (it dies have a right click copy menu)
The actual conversation between your computer and the server should appear, sans passwords and user ids, so we can have a look in detail at what is happening.

It appears the problem was that AT&T revoked a certificate and didn't replace it until the next day. Things should be back to normal very soon.
Ed, Thank you so much for your prompt reply! It is much appreciated. Thunderbird which has been able to send emails, was suddenly able to download new emails but would no longer shortly thereafter. I have now gone to the ATT web server (where I can still see new emails) and created a new Secure Mail Key. Now Thunderbird will not even send emails requesting a new password, and not accepting the newly created Secure Mail Key. Not sure what to do next. I am not optimistic that going to the ATT store will be of much use, but I am desperate. Perhaps ATT has made some change to my ID which I would need to enter into Thunderbird for the ATT servers to recognize my account.
Try contacting their support, FWIW.

Unlikely
Wayne, Thanks so much for your reply, to which I agree it was unlikely that ATT would suddenly make some change to my profile. My iPhone is no longer able to get messages either!!! I went to the ATT store today they weren't able to help ("beyond my pay grade"). They suggestsed going to Apple which I did even though I didn't suspect it had anything to do with them. I did have a brief discussion with staff who weren't sure why I was suddenly having any issues. They did offer to set up an appointment at their Genius Bar which I may do, but again suspecting Apple had nothing to do with it. It's either a Thunderbird issue where the log-in etc info isn't matching with the ATT email profile or the ATT email profile is somehow messed up (i.e. is it drleo or drleo@att.net? . I have tried every possible combination. I have the correct inbound and outbound servers, SSL/TLS, Authenication Normal PW (as instructed for when using a Secure Mail Key (I have repeatedly created a new Secure Mail Key) and at least the outbound Secure Mail Key does show correctly in Saved PW, but still can't send outbound messages (log in fails). My username is full email address.
Lets look at this. Your Thunderbird version is obsolete. It is the latest for your operating system but protocol requirements and supported connections do change for ATT after V115.
Specifically Thunderbird now uses oauth to authenticate ATT. Does your passwords list any oauth:\\ entries for yahoo servers or ATT?
Matt, Thanks so much for your reply. Your info is very appreciated. I was well aware that using OS 10.13.6 (the latest version my 64-bit MacBook Pro handles) could create issues with some software, but I have had no porblem for years now with Thunderbird 115 esr, and installing the periodic recommended updates (now 115.18.0esr). I was not aware that Thunderbird now uses OAuth2 for accessing ATT (or is that for all versions of Thunderbird, or only the newer versions?). When I had queried what PW Thunderbird 115 required to access ATT Yahoo it was the 16-character Secure Mail Key and entered as Normal Password in Thunderbird. So I created a Secure Mail Key in my ATT Yahoo profile, and entered that as Normal Password in Thunderbird, again as guided, but to no avail. Thunderbird no longer able to connect to ATT server.
Not sure what suddenly changed, so your info re. 115 being obsolete and I suspect therefore no longer being updated may be the basis of the sudden failure. But newer versions of Thunderbird require OS 10.15 or later. But why can't my 115 continue to access ATT, or does ATT now require Thunderbird (even 115) to use OAuth2?
And I don't know anything about OAuth2 authentication. What password is required, i.e. is there a special OAuth2 Password that I need to somehow create? Or do I simply select OAuth2 in Thunderbird 115 and use my Secure Mail Key, or some other password? Once again, thanks for any guidance.

Since Thunderbird can still send emails but cannot retrieve them, I’d first check whether the incoming POP connection is being blocked or failing authentication. The missing inbound server entry in Saved Passwords is worth investigating, especially since AT&T requires a Secure Mail Key for many third-party email clients. Try removing any saved incoming-server credentials, restarting Thunderbird, and checking whether it prompts you to enter the key again. Also, verify the incoming server settings with AT&T, as server-side authentication or compatibility changes may be responsible.

Matt, I so appreciate your generosity with your time and assistance, albeit to no avail. I did find the Config Ed and expensive preferences list, and as you directed changed the mailnews.pop3.loglevel from "Warn" to "All" but no difference. I couldn't find the Error Console. Now when trying to get messages I get the response "Sending PW did not succeed. Server responded [SYS/TEMP] server error" and when trying to send I get "Login to server outbound.att.net with username drleo@att.net failed." and the request to enter the new PW which I do, but to no avail and it keeps asking me to enter the new PW. But in Saved PWs both the inbound and outbound servers show up with the current correct Secure Mail Key. I have tried everything, double and triple checking all entries. I am at my wits end. The people at the Apple store were no help. "Beyond my pay grade" is the response I got from the staff I met with. They suggested I check with Apple, which I doubted would be of any use as this doesn't appear to have anything to do with my Mac hardware, OS and Apple, but I went anyway. No help really but they were very willing to be supportive. Could it be that my 64-bit Mac (albeit older) and OS 10.13.6 and Thunderbird 115.18.0esr (I understand obsolete) suddenly stopped playing nice with each other? If so maybe there is no solution for me with this current setup. I have been staying with OS 10.13.6 (the most recent OS that my Mac will run) because I have importan 32-bit software that currently works fine but apparently will not work if I get an new Mac with a current OS. Then I would need to keep both machines. Arrgghhh!!!
Regarding Oauth2, it is listed as an option for my inbound server authentication but it doesn't show as an option for my outbound server authentication, only no authentication, normal pw, encrypted pw, Kerberos / GSSAPI, and NTLM. Should I just try changing the inbound authentication to OAuth2 and see what happens?.
