android imap client is deleting retrieved emails
I have a POP3 account setup on my laptop and recently downloaded the thunderbird mobile app for android on my phone. I setup the android mobile app as IMAP to access the same server account as my POP3 laptop. When I look at my thunderbird phone email notifications in the morning, I compare them to the emails in my inbox on my laptop and find that the emails I see on my phone DO NOT show up in my inbox on my laptop ? I thought IMAP was NOT supposed to delete messages on the server when retrieved to my phone. My intent was to just read emails remotely on my phone but leave them on the server. I want my POP3 laptop account to see all of my emails and control whether to delete them or not after reading.

Hi ksands
Emails deleted as you describe will be removed from the phone.
You will see ALL messages ONLY from folders that "Sync" or "Push" is enabled on. If sync is not enabled on a folder, the contained messages will not download.
To check the folders being synchronised. Navigate: Email account > manage folders > [folder name]
Regarding your question on the "Mark as read when deleted" option. This setting changes the email status to unread before moving it to the phone and servers deleted/trash folder.
You don't say who your email provider is! Imap on 143 for non TLS/SSL connections appears common. Using a secure connection is highly advised.

Hi Ksands
Message downloads via imap are not deleted from the server.
If you however delete emails using the app, they will be deleted from the server, ie. moved to the servers deleted/trash folder. Permanent deletion would require you to empty the trash folder.
You can set how deletions are handled within the app. Settings > Account > Fetching Mail: [When I delete a message]
- Do not delete from server
- Delete from server
- Mark as read on server
Did you manually add the server settings or use the automatically detected ones.
To re-assure yourself, perhaps double check Thunderbird on your phone is setup to use Imap and not pop. Look at settings > account > fetching mail > incoming server.
My goal is to be able to read ALL of my emails on my phone and control when they are deleted on the server from my POP3 laptop client. So I changed a setting on my POP3 laptop under settings>account settings > server settings:
1. Leave messages on server - This was unchecked and I checked it. I also checked: For at most 1 day.
By doing this, I assume messages will stay on the server until:
1. I delete a message 2. If I have not manually deleted a message, it will be deleted automatically after a day on the server.
On my IMAP phone client under Settings > Account > Fetching mail I left the following settings as is:
1. Sync server deletions - This is checked. 2. Mark as read when deleted - This is checked. Not sure how to interpret this. Is this mark as read on Server or on my phone ? 3. When I delete a message - The option is set to Delete from server 4. Erase deleted messages on server - This option is set to Immediately.
With these settings I assume I will see ALL messages on my phone, and they will disappear from my phone when I either delete a message from my POP3 laptop client, OR the messages are deleted automatically on the server after a day based on my POP3 laptop client settings.
As to whether my phone client is setup as an IMAP client: When I go to Settings > Account > Fetching mail > Incoming server, there is no definitive setting that says IMAP. The ONLY setting I see that mentions IMAP is: Auto-detect IMAP namespace and that setting is checked. After googling how to setup IMAP on my Thunderbird phone client, I found that setting the port SEEMED to control whether it is IMAP. I am not using any security for my emails, so I am using port 143 with the same server, authentication, username, and password as my POP3 laptop client. The only difference is I am using port 143 for IMAP on my phone and port 110 for POP3 on my laptop client.
If I am misinterpreting these settings, please let me know.
Forgot to answer your question: I manually added the phone server settings.

Thank you for your prompt response. After making the settings changes I mentioned earlier, everything seems to be behaving as I wanted. BTW, my email provider is Spectrum/Time Warner.
Thanks for your time !
