extra mouse buttons causing trouble

hi, I recently purchased a new wireless mouse and keyboard... and my only problem is that there are a couple extra buttons on my new mouse... roughly thumb position... and are by default set to navigate backward and forward.... I'm running ubuntu linux... which results in accidentally clicking back midway through a video or podcast and losing my position more often than you'd expect... any idea how I might either reassign or disable them entirely on the software side of things? thanks. -dan

I can't test this with my very basic mouse, but please give it a try and let us know whether it helps:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

More info on about:config: Configuration Editor for Firefox. The moderators would like us to remind you that changes made through this back door aren't fully supported and aren't guaranteed to continue working in the future.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste mousebutton and pause while the list is filtered. Firefox should list two preferences.

(3) Double-click the mousebutton.4th.enabled preference to switch the value from true to false

(4) Double-click the mousebutton.5th.enabled preference to switch the value from true to false

Does that work?

It might also be possible to reassign what those buttons do in Firefox and other browsers though some system-level software, or simply to prevent them from sending Back and Forward (possibly as Alt+Left and Alt+Right).

Although this isn't a Firefox/Mozzila issue, hence probably will be marked as off-topic, but I know exactly what you mean, Dan!

I've been using a mouse with extra buttons for years and had this same issue when I first switched to one. After a while, I started using the 'Forward' and 'Backward' buttons extensively.

My first suggestion would be to stick with it for a while if this is a new experience for you. Your muscle memory will adjust to the new buttons, and then it'll feel just like using a standard three-button mouse— but with extra features!

However, if you absolutely don't want to use this feature, depending on the brand of your mouse, it likely has a software solution (for example, iCUE for a Corsair mouse). These programs typically let you remap those buttons to something else or disable them entirely.

Hope this helps. Cheers!
