Why has FF created two profiles? Can I delete one?

I'm clearing space on my hard disk. I discover FF has 2 profiles, both with default-release as part of their names. One was last modified today, and one last modified a few months ago. I've not knowingly done anything to create a profile in that period. Why have I got two, and can I delete the older one?

Yes, you can delete it from the about:profiles page.
