sign in fail
I am unable to sign in, it asks for my gmail password which I give, and it is correct, but I am unable to sign in and I keep keep the enter your password again and again. I am able to sign into my gmail on this computer through gmail directly, and also on my iPhone so I know my password is correct. I have been using Thunderbird for years and would like to continue to do so.

Are you using OAUTH security? It seems you are not. If I'm correct, change your security setting to OAUTH and remove your current password and then connect. Google will prompt you through the authorization process.
