Well, that is very unfortunate, because I use these menus a lot, especially the Bookmarks menu.

Well, that is very unfortunate, because I use these menus a lot, especially the Bookmarks menu.

Do the css fixes that work for FF91 at least still work in FF93? And if i allow an upgrade from 91 to 93, will the fix still work, or do I have to re-apply it?

I also only use the top 'Menu Bar' , so I understand the issue. I applied all the css info etc at this comment: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1346810#answer-1434380

You can further reduce the spacing by reducing the 3px for padding block down to 2px or 1px to suit your prefered spacing.

I'm now using Firefox 93.0

I can confirm that the css code is still working perfectly ok. Which means all the massive unwanted phone type bad design spacing that is currently being applied to all users using a PC is removed. Including :

• Top menu bar (File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, Help) drop-downs
• Menu app icon (3 horizontal lines) drop down menu items
• Bookmarks Toolbar drop down menus (Assuming you have this showing - I do not as it's not required)
• Right click drop down menus
• Bookmark icon (Assuming you have this showing - I do not as it's not required)

In fact, there is no massive spacing anywhere. No PC requires that spacing.

I'm disappointed that the developers seem unable to understand why it is not required, because I'm certain it is not beyond their skillset to fix this problem.

It certainly should not be beyond them, because they intentionally un-fixed it in the first place.

The Menu Bar with Bookmarks is the only Bookmarks I was talking about because I never customised anything to show eg: Bookmarks Toolbar - unecessary waste of space and I cannot stand icons as I'm always forgetting what they represent. A star in a tray does not make me think of Bookmarks. You get less drop down space using the icon. Basically, I had completely forgotten they even existed. So as far as I'm concerned nothing has been fixed and the plight of people has not been considered.

It is shocking to think anyone would be allowed to come up with a design for a browser which is unsuitable for a PC and do it deliberately. When I or anyone is forced to resort to creating 'userChrome.css' files just to fix bad design it's very worrying.

The fix is so simple and the one thing that Firefox developers need to understand is do not use designs for phones as designs for PC's.

Just to double-check: In about:config, you can confirm that browser.uidensity is set to 1 for Compact density (https://www.userchrome.org/firefox-89-styling-proton-ui.html#compactmode).

As I mentioned before, this change is for drop-downs from the two toolbars:

1. Bookmarks Toolbar folder drop-downs: Starting in Fx93, Compact Mode density tightens these up
2. Bookmarks Menu button () drop-down: Starting in Fx93, Compact Mode density tightens this up (see earlier screenshot)
3. Top menu bar (File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, Help) drop-downs: Compact Mode density has no effect
4. Right-click context menus: Compact Mode density has no effect

I realize that will disappoint many people and... I only have unofficial workarounds.

Just to double-check: In about:config, you can confirm that browser.uidensity is set to 1 for Compact density (https://www.userchrome.org/firefox-89-styling-proton-ui.html#compactmode).

I can confirm that it's set on my PC and it doesn't fix the problem - Bookmarks are still unusable

How do you normally view your bookmarks? For example:

• top menu bar (File, Edit, View...) -- not affected by Compact Mode density
• Bookmarks Menu button () -- compacted by Compact Mode density

Currently, there is no official/supported solution for reducing the spacing on those menus or on right-click context menus. You still have the option to apply CSS changes to that menu.

Sadly that is not always the case. While the CSS solution is very detailed it's also is complex and beyond the average user. In my case one of the machines is a work laptop and I simply don't have rights to modify the CSS file.

Understood, not everyone can use this workaround.

I realize it's a change to your workflow, but would you consider putting the Bookmarks Menu button at the right end of the menu bar? I realize it's not keyboardable...

That's an interesting suggestion. It's not ideal, but better that anything else that's been suggested. Cheers

The only thing I can think of is the desktops are using a higher screen resolution. Very disappointing. I'm getting rather disenchanted with the FireFox organisation, they seem to be going out of their way to annoy users.

Perhaps if the setting were on by default then it might reduce the frustration felt by users and the number of complaints received? Surely this must be easy to implement?

Agree. It should be on by default because you are using a PC and not a phone. But this basic developer level error of thinking PC's have same requirements as phones needs to be addressed. Surely, the Firefox developers were informed of their error and told to get the code corrected. It really makes them look like rookies. I've been a helper in the Support Forums for over a decade and it is embarrassing to say the least.

It should be acknowledged that jscher2000 has really worked hard on this just to get a compact mode available on a couple of areas to much relief, but many people use the Menu Bar. It still leaves the virtually the entire browser menus etc as if not designed for a PC.

People should not have to use some elementary code in a userchrome file to fix something that should not have occurred in the first place. Which just goes to show how simple it would be to actually fix the problem. It is only website design for phones that needs adjustments. I would have expected the developers responsibile to have been reprimanded on allowing this to occur in the first place and a fix on entire browser to be rapidly forthcoming.

I have to agree with you about jscher2000; it can't be easy having to handle all the criticism this issue is receiving and it's not as if any of this is his fault.

IMHO it just looks as if the developers are not really interested in Desktop use anymore. In my case I've been using one web browser or another since the very early days of the web (so it's approaching 30 years now!) In that time I've always used the bookmarks tool bar to locate the sites I've saved. To reprogram my self after all this time to use sidebars, buttons on the tool bar or any other workaround just doesn't come naturally.
