Back button sometimes does not work

more options

Ever since I installed version 89.0, the back button has at times not worked. After going to a new page, the button is highlighted as if it were functional, but pressing it does nothing. It does not go back or show the recent history. Neither going to a different site nor opening a new tab or window helps. Rebooting solves the problem temporarily.

I have not determined whether the problem arises after visiting any particular sites.

Try doing a right-click.

Did you try to open the tab history by holding down the left mouse button on either back or forward button to see if you would have to skip entries ?

Start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or userChrome.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Troubleshoot Mode start window

By the way, the reason for suggesting you right-click the Back button is that sometimes pages redirect to a new address, or add URLs related to specific content in the page. In those cases, you can use the tab history drop-down from the Back button to skip back further in tab history.
