That's alarming. If you compare in another browser such as Edge, does the Inbox show the expected messages?

thanks for responding. same thing in edge. thought maybe i could connect here with someone with the same issue so i'd know i'm not crazy. i doubt it's a browser issue. the only related queries i can find in gmail support -- ranging over several years -- seem to endlessly dance around the issue and then cut things off without ever admitting it was their screw-up.

Maybe there is a filter or special view causing this, but we need to rule out bulk deletion or archiving. Could you check the Trash folder and All Mail view and see whether the missing emails appear there?

If those are hard to find in the left column, you can edit the hash on the URL and submit that through the address bar. For example:

no filters (also checked pop/imap settings), no changes in "view." "all mail" and other folders don't seem to be affected: contain older mail, but not those that were still in the inbox: unread, or read and not moved or deleted (what would normally be under "everything else." trash is trash. i'm pretty convinced that this is a gmail blip. in searches, find many complaints over the years about similar losses to a variety of different messages. i am using an older view, so i'm starting to wonder if some kind of update screwed up us dinosaurs.

Was the older view the one that was paginated, i.e., you had to click to see the next group instead of having them auto-loaded as you scroll down? Or maybe that was the even more basic view. Hard to remember...

But anyway, if it's supposed to auto-load as you scroll, perhaps those background requests either are not triggering or are failing for some reason. ??

this view -- unread mail first then read -- is not that old and worked just fine until yesterday. i've made no changes, so i have to assume that someone else did. thanks for staying on this, but i'm more and more convinced it's a gmail problem.
