Problem began 8-10 days ago. Amazon.com began to display in text mode only. Has always worked correctly until then. Other websites work fine. Have Firefox 56.0.2. Could recent Firefox security update have anything to do with it? Thanks to all.

OK, folks. Problem fixed, at least for the time being. Finally found a related problem on the HughesNet website and most were resolved by rebooting the satellite modem. Although I had already unplugged the modem, then plugged it in again, which did not help, I found the actual "reset" button, did the reset using that button and now it works as expected.

This resolved all problems which I had described previously so is/was clearly the problem. My first idea was that it had to be in the hardware for it to be affecting everything, but when I unplugged, then repowered I thought that would verify. Maybe it's just the way I was holding my mouth, as they say.

So, mystery solved. Thanks very much for your combined brainpower to help me and perhaps this will be useful for someone else in the future!

Blessings to all!

Do you use Amazon on an HTTPS address -- https://www.amazon.com/ ? If so, do you get the normal green lock icon in the address bar or a lock with a special symbol on it? Is there a "shield" icon to the left of it? In that case, it could be What happened to Tracking Protection?.

And I will suggest "the usual:"

If a site is generally known to work in Firefox, these are general suggestions to try when it stops working normally:

Cache and Cookies: When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes. If you do not see the number going down on the page, you can reload it using Ctrl+r to check progress.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or "i" icon in the address bar, then the ">" button, then More Information, and finally the "View Cookies" button

In the dialog that opens, the current site should be pre-filled in the search box at the top of the dialog so you can remove that site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Testing in Firefox's Safe Mode: In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement? (More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode)

Thanks for detailed reply. 1. Using "https://www.amazon.com", green lock appears, but page takes forever to appear and when it does it's in Text mode. 2. Cleared Cache but didn't seem to help. 3. Thanks for info to access Cookies. Will go through them and, hopefully, find the one causing the problem.

Appreciate the help and will let you know the result when I finish.

Have you tried Safe Mode? I was just there and placed an order.

Sorry for delay. Had to go to town for awhile.

Have tried all suggestions (deleted all cookies) but no joy. Yes (to FredMcD) I tried in Safe Mode but still did not respond properly.

More info. Same problem with Microsoft Edge (guess that's the name of their latest version of IE).

More background. This problem showed up on both my and my wife's computer at the same time. Yep, same internet feed via satellite, through wireless router and then through gigzhertz switch. Tried feeding the satellite directly into my computer but still no joy.

Found some old information that says "deleted all of the custom/personal entries for "Adblock Plus" and for "NoScript". Also cleaned out a number of entries in the NoScript ABE collections which fixed it.

I don't understand where to find these. Can anyone explain?

Maybe nothing to do with FireFox, but any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks for your inputs!

Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Safe websites. Is the problem still there?

Adblock Plus and NoScript are extensions. They would be disabled in Firefox's Safe Mode, so if you had the same problem in Safe Mode, these steps would not be helpful.

Two other things to consider, since it affects multiple browsers:

(1) Filtering software

Security suites and parental control software may block some elements of web pages. Are you aware of any products like that running on the computer?

(2) Indirect connection

Do you connect directly to websites? What I mean is, do you use any private VPN, or proxy server, or peer-to-peer network (e.g., Hola), or onion routing (e.g., Tor)? In that case, the problem may be associated with the alternate network. You could try connecting directly and see whether that makes a difference.

Speaking of connections, you can check your settings here:

  • Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
  • Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
  • Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences
  • Any system: type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it

Firefox 56-58: In the search box at the top of the page on the right side, type proxy and Firefox should filter to the "Settings" button, which you can click. 2 Firefox 38-55: In the left column, click Advanced. Then on the right side, with the "Network" mini-tab active, click the "Settings" button.

In All Versions: The default of "Use system proxy settings" piggybacks on your Windows/IE "LAN" setting. "Auto-detect" can lead to a flaky connection. You may want to try "No proxy".

Thanks again guys. Haven't had time to try your excellent suggestions but should be able to get back to it Sunday afternoon. Thanks again

Sounds like Adblocker to me, I had to switch from ABP to uBlock Origin to fix some sites that starting messing up last week. You can switch off COSMETICS on an easy toggle which fixes most sites

Hi skpManiac, Thanks for your input. Can I bother you to ask where can I find "cosmetics". I'm not familiar with it. FireFox, Windows, ??

OK, now understand that Adblocker and uBlock Origin are Add-ons. I do not have either of those. And understand that Cosmetics is a setting in uBlock Origin. For the heck of it, I added uBlock Origin, then turned turned Cosmetics off, but no change.

Also, have tried various hardware/network connection changes, but no joy. It's a simple system with satellite modem feeding into a wireless router feeding into a gigabyte switch with 2 desktop computers, 1 laptop, and a few other things like 2 Iphones connecting to the wireless router. Bypassed the wireless router but no help. Plugged the satellite output directly into my computer network card but no help. Seems like a hardware issue but nothing I do will isolate it.

Yes, started computer in Safe mode plus Firefox in Safe mode but problem remains.

One more thing that seems to isolate it to the computer in some way: When in area of the wireless router, my Iphone has the same access problem, as it's using the wireless connection to the Internet. So, I shutdown the wireless connection on the Iphone and, voila, it brings up amazon.com perfectly because it is using the cellular data system.

I never give up so will continue to resolve the issue and will let you folks know what I, eventually, find as perseverance is my middle name.

Thanks again for everyone's help!

That's good research!

Maybe you have powered the wi-fi router off and on by now but, if not, you could try that.

Does it have any filtering or parental control features built in?

If the router's DNS uses your ISP's servers, an option is to use Google's Public DNS or OpenDNS instead.

Can you open any of the blocked files directly via the location/address bar?

You can check the Web Console (Tools -> Web Developer) for messages about blocked content and about the presence of mixed or unsafe content.

You can check the Network Monitor to see if content is blocked or otherwise fails to load.

If necessary use "Ctrl+F5" or "Ctrl+Shift+R" to reload the page and bypass the cache to generate a fresh log.
