I'm sure I could just lose all my stored passwords. But that's not good enough. Surely you could have a security question which I could enter or choose from a list) which if answered correctly would enable me to change it. It just seems to be a bit sudden to have to lose everything in one foul swoop!

I was mentioning that if you look in the bookmarks library use Ctrl+Shift+B one of the fields that bookmarks have is a description

Bookmark the current page, this question as an example

That has no description but you may edit that and add what you wish as a description. Click the down arrow that says Moreand you will get a text box to add a description

That article's bookmark actually has a description already included

Setting a master password in Firefox is helpful if your share your computer with others. We'll explain how it works.

I am just suggesting these fields could be used to include some hint helping you to remember the password. If you choose he password and the hint carefully it could be relatively secure. And certainly better than writing the password openly on a post it, in a diary or in an ordinary computer document.

Yes you can reset the master password. Read below.

Note that if you reset the Master Password via the chrome URL you lose all passwords stored in the Password Manager.
The same is the case if you delete the signons.sqlite and key3.db files or one of them gets corrupted.
So it is best to keep a copy of both file and remember the MP as well.

You can also use this extension to make a backup.

Thanks for replying. I didn't want to delete all saved passwords. So I went on a blitz to enter every combination I could think of - and wooppee! I stumbled on the word! Now to remember it!

Suggestion to help you easily remember the master password.

Make a bookmark of any thing you want, the password article may be particularly suitable.

Then choose your own security question. NOT one that is used elsewhere such as Mother's maiden name; that some banks etc. may ask you. Use the answer to the security question as your password. Maybe make it even more secure by combining two questions to give a longer password.

Now edit your bookmark

  • Make the bookmark name something such as master password
That makes it easy for you to find.
  • Add your security question into the description field.

Now in future as long as you have access to your bookmarks you have access to a hint for your master password.

Note that is never a good idea to use a password that can found via a dictionary look up as such a password can be cracked within seconds.

Passwords should contain uppercase and lowercase characters (e.g. a-z, A-Z) and have digits (0-9) and punctuation characters and symbols (`~!@#$%&*()-_=+[]{}\;:'",.<>/?) and the length should at least be 8, but better is a length of 12 or more.

Thanks for your help. But I don't understand just what you mean. In Firefox, I save a website as a bookmark. But then how do I add a security question to that? I'm sorry I don't understand!

You should get used to it that a password should never be an existing word or a combination of words that could be in a word list (there are plenty of word lists circulating on internet). Even if you would substitute a '1' for an 'i' or make other easy changes (uppercase/lowercase). Such methods are known and used in password cracking programs. A possibility is to remember a phrase and use the first or second or last letter of each word in that phrase to form the password and if possible change some letters to numbers and include other symbols if they are allowed.
