downloaded and installed newest version of firefox and it STILL freezes when i open it. literally came out of nowhere all of a sudden one day, just freezes and can't do anything on it. now have to use internet explorer :(. any suggestions that don't include going to a firefox support page that has far too many stupid ideas for fixing solutions?

Hi verymadpamda,
Sorry to hear you are having problems.

It must be frustrating if Firefox is not working. Unfortunatley fixing it may mean that you have to try doing a few things to provide more information and make changes. Remember it will work for most people, and any problem is probably something on your own machine and setup, rather than with Firefox itself.

I will make the assumption that you would like to try to fix the problem.

  1. If you have been using Firefox for a while you may have information you would like to keep, bookmarks and passwords for instance. If that is the case you may consider it a priority to preserve that information. To do that you will need to make a copy of your profile, all the files and folders it contains.
(This is optional, because Firefox tries to keep this info, but if you do not do this, do not later complain if you loose things).
    • to make a copy of your profile (I suggest you put it somewhere safe outside Firefox program or profile paths - I would normally suggest the Windows Desktop, - because you mention IE so I assume that your Operating System is Windows ) follow the instructions in
  2. Lets assume that the problem is what we tend to call a hang. If that is the case Firefox freezes. (Rather than stopping completely and Crashing). Again assuming you are using Windows, the immediate solution is to kill the process firefox.exe and if present plugincontainer.exe
  3. Now try to restart Firefox, but I suggest you try in Firefox's Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode as explained in that linked article. The easiest method may be to try holding the shift key on the keyboard when you click on the Firefox shortcut icon.
    • No need to make any changes when you see the first Window listing options, just click on continue.
    • do you actually see the options to start in safe mode and make changes
    • did Firefox start up, and did it work, or did it still freeze ?

I could continue and try to explain what a crash is, and what you need to do if that is what is happening, and how to create and use a new profile, but I think it may take you a while to try to follow the above instructions. Please try them, and post back with how you get on.

If my explanation is not clear please try to say what I have explained badly and I will try to clarify.
