How do I get Firefox to signal me when a new email arrives?

Is there a speaker toggle on-off switch somewhere that I can turn to have Firefox alert me to new emails when they come in?

You can try the WebMail Notifier add-on which can inform you when email arrives in web based email accounts - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/webmail-notifier/

Yes but for the other applications Google has I am forced to use another browser.
