Firefox Does Not Fully Render Pages Unless They Are in focus.

Hello, once every morning I start 14 tabbed Internet pages. The pages do not fully render unless they are in focus. Is there an About:Config or other setting where I can get all 14 pages to fully and completely render without getting each one into focus one by one?

This is a very slow process and is annoying over time. I believe there was a time where Firefox would render all tabs/pages without getting each one into focus.

Hi, how are you opening the pages? For example:

  • These are pinned tabs that carry over from session to session - by default, all pinned tabs should be loaded; in about:config, the setting for this is browser.sessionstore.restore_pinned_tabs_on_demand => false (i.e., load without having to access the tab)
  • These were normal tabs that restored from the previous session - by default, only the active tab is loaded; in about:config, the setting for this is browser.sessionstore.restore_on_demand => true (i.e., do not load until activated)
  • These are set as my home pages
  • These are loaded using a desktop shortcut with command line parameters
  • These are loaded by right-clicking a folder in Bookmarks and choosing Open All Bookmarks
  • Some other method

Websites may wait until they are visible before fully loading. You can spoof visibility by installing an extension like Always active Window (Always Visible).

They are loaded by left-clicking a folder on the Bookmarks Toolbar and choosing Open All in Tabs. I have several monitors with about 1 to 5 tabs in each one. Is there an About:Config setting I can change to render all 12 tabs? I believe in the past Firefox would completely render all the pages but they changed this.

I would prefer not to use an extension, especially if it's not open-source. I may if I have to.

Thanks for letting me know. I'll take a look at it. I would prefer an About:Config setting for simplicity if possible. For security, I prefer to use only open-source extensions. Mozilla added this Caution Badge to this extension:

"This add-on is not actively monitored for security by Mozilla. Make sure you trust it before installing."

However, the Always Active Window extension does look interesting.

If anyone has an About:Config setting please let me know.

When I pick a random small folder, all the tabs load and render. Perhaps it is a problem with some stuck files in the web content cache, or a specific site script that requires the page to be visible before some of its functions execute.

There are some add-ons that disable sites from checking whether the page is currently visible (Page Visibility API). The one I've used is pretty much only for video sites, but someone has posted a general purpose one if you want to check it out (I have not tried it myself):

It's definitely the web pages I am loading.

Disable Page Visibility API is more limited than Always active Window:

There are other ways to detect if a webpage is visible, e.g. onblur/onfocus. This add-on does not disable any of those other ways.

Both of these extensions have open source licenses and are very minimalist. You can disable automatic updates for extensions you feel are less trustworthy.
