I would appreciate specific simple answers to this issue. Saving to a hidden sidebar is not the answer and not a helpful solution. Sorry to be so critical; however, 'firefox seems to be so preoccupied with constant minor "tinkering" updates and not address key issues such as this...rjk

I can think of two things:

Bookmarks

You can bookmark a page to any folder, and as many as you like in a single folder. You do not need to create new folders for each bookmark. If your Firefox is not showing the New Bookmark drop-down to let you choose a folder when you click the star or press Ctrl+d, there's a checkbox for that (info to be provided if needed), and if you want to pre-set a different default folder, there's an add-on for that.

The only time I can think of that Firefox suggests creating a new folder for bookmarks is if you have selected multiple tabs or select Bookmark All Tabs (Ctrl+Shift+d). Is that the scenario: you want to create bookmarks for multiple tabs at once in an existing folder?
