Linux, updating in /usr/local causes all bookmarks etc. to be lost

I am about ready to dump firefox after YEARS of use. I download official tarball, unpack it as root in /usr/local and make /usr/local/firefox a symlink to it. But every damn update since FireFox 67 results in ALL bookmarks and saved passwords and extensions being LOST on update. I even made a firefox account even though I did not want one, and used the "sync" feature from menu - but it didn't stop ALL my user preferences and bookmarks from being COMPLETELY LOST on update. I am at wits end. This is not acceptable. I do not like chromium, but it sure beats losing everything on every update. Please fix this nonesense. Multiple profiles is only of use to developers, why did you make firefox completely unusable for me?

Thank you to Ted (not a user here) who explained that I could enter about:profiles into the browser window and search through the numerous profiles there until I found the one that was being used in the previous version of FireFox.

Why anyone should have to do that is rather puzzling to me, I really have lost faith in Mozilla's UI QA testing. They forgot KISS.

Hopefully I don't have to do that next update as well, but I have a feeling I will.
