I follow instructions but this tool bar entry cannot be deleted. Furthermore the page that it reaches keeps changing. I am at a loss, because there seems to be something fishy going on, as though there is an invading malware. More than that whenever I try to do something, it goes to facebook check that I am not robot page where I am supposed to answer which is a car, which is a street sign. etc. I am worried that I got invaded by some hacker's tool. I reloaded firefox couple of times but it keeps coming back.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page
    in case errors are reported close and restart Firefox and retry

If "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page cannot repair places.sqlite then remove all places.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

  • Help -> Troubleshooting Information -> Profile Directory:
    Windows: Show Folder; Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder

Let's make sure your system is clean.

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

Deleting a rogue cookies sqilte file and restoring old tool bar solved the problem, but I could not edit the toolbar content file.

Note that a reCAPTCHA may work better (easier) if you are logged in to a Google account.

I am not gmail user. Deleing rogue cookies file, reloading old toolbar in July solved a problem, so far. Crossing my fingers, because my phone still allows download of Firefox without asking me for password suggesting malware etc. I stopped syncing devices.
