Firefox shut down on its own today, resetting to day zero. All my tabs sence 2012, over 1,000+ TABS are gone--with no acsess to them, including my e-mail.

more options

I restarted my Mac today because it prompted me to do so. I had to "force Quit" Firefox and Pages in order to be allowed to proceed. When to restart finished, I reopened Firefox--but was NOT prompted to "Restore Your Previous Session", instead ONLY ONE WINDOW opened containing ONE TAB of the "search engine" Safe Finder by YaHoo. I don't even HAVE YaHoo on my computer!

What SHOULD HAVE APPEARED is ""~15 black, minimized WINDOWS, and two ACTIVE WINDOWS--all containing 1,000 or MORE TABS and ALL OF MY PASSWORDS""--dating back to when I first turned on my computer in 2012.

I am on the Autistic Spectrum and I SAVE ALL THAT INFORMATION VISUALLY!, until I am finished using it, then I shut the tabs--NEVER TO BE REOPENED.

I attempted to use the "Restore Previous Session" option in the drop-down menu, but IT WAS IN GRAY AND UNUSABLE! I want ALL of my tabs and windows RESTORED! And without ME HAVING TO RELOAD EVERY SITE MANUALLY!, by CLICKING on EVERY website in my computer's History file! I do not even know if that will go back to 2012.

Please fix this problem.

Thank you, Zragonal@hotmail.com

Post Script: I am not sure that I will even be able to access my e-mail account without ITS TAB. So this may be a futile endeavor, if I do not reestablish that site's tab, through my History file. I will do that next.

Hi, is there a folder on your desktop called OldFirefoxProfile ? If there is it is possible to see if any data is recoverable from it.

Create a new profile as a TEST to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem. Never work with original files.

Always :

Sorry for your loss you may want to try using a Session Manager

NONE of the above links RESTORE LOST OPEN TABS! They ONLY restore "lost" Bookmarks, Passwords, personal settings, and extensions. I did not loose any "Bookmarks" because I did not have ANY!

As I clearly stated in my letter: I LOST ALL OF MY ""TABS"", that were open in 15 separately minimized WINDOWS, as well as TWO ACTIVE WINDOWS! None of those 1,000+ TABS were "Bookmarked". And none of those TABS "caused" their removal, that was carried out by Firefox's system-wide UPGRADE to the next newest VERSION: "Quantum 59.0.2".

So, in essence, are you telling me that there is NO WAY to retrieve those "deleted/closed" TABS from the ""CLOUD"" or Firefox's system using a ""TimeMachine"" type of program?

(Basically, I will have to go and MANUALLY reopen each and EVERY website in my HISTORY file and HOPE that it goes back to 2012, not just a few years in to the past.)

If that is the reality, then you, Pkshadow, did not change ANYTHING. And "IF" I successfully restore EACH missing TAB--within the next year's worth of time (hopefully it will not take me longer)--I will BOOKMARK EACH AND EVERY OPEN-TAB; so as to not loose them on the next "RANDOM" Firefox system update.

FIREFOX SHOULD INFORM ITS USERS THAT "TABS ARE NOT SAVED DURING A SYSTEM VERSION UPGRADE"!

Thank you, Pkshadow, for attempting to help. And do let me know if I am mistaken in my conclusion.

Since this problem started two days ago, some of this may come too late for you:

If Restore Previous Session is missing or grayed, check either:

  • "Library" toolbar button > History > Recently Closed Windows (and within each restored window, Recently Closed Tabs)
  • (menu bar) History > Recently Closed Windows (and within each restored window, Recently Closed Tabs)

By default, Firefox only remembers 3 closed windows, so at most, that would have helped a little bit.

Firefox creates numerous session history files, but because session history is only for the immediately previous session, it is unfortunately too easy to lose it. Could you start by making a backup of your existing session history files? Here's how:

You can open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Show in Finder" button. If you don't see a huge list of files and folders, but Find has selected a folder with a semi-random name like a1b2c3d4.default, double-click into that folder.

In your profile folder, double-click into the sessionstore-backups folder. Save all files here to a safe location such as your Documents folder.

What files did you find?

The kinds of files you may find among your sessionstore files are:

  • recovery.jsonlz4: the windows and tabs in your currently live Firefox session (or, if Firefox crashed at the last shutdown and is still closed, your last session)
  • recovery.baklz4: a backup copy of recovery.jsonlz4
  • previous.jsonlz4: the windows and tabs in your last Firefox session
  • upgrade.jsonlz4-build_id: the windows and tabs in the Firefox session that was live at the time of your last update
  • various .js files from Firefox 55 or earlier

Could you take a look at what you have and the date/time of the various files to see whether you think any of them would have the missing tabs?

To preview the contents of a file, you can drag and drop it onto this page, then click Scrounge URLs: https://www.jeffersonscher.com/res/scrounger.html

That tool is on my site, so please let me know if it doesn't work for you.

> Safe Finder by YaHoo

This may be caused by a bad add-on or other malware infection.

You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Command+Shift+a (Windows: Ctrl+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions.

Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. Any extensions Firefox installs for built-in features are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything suspicious or that you just do not remember installing or why? If in doubt, disable (or remove).

Any improvement?

Hi, essentially the answer is yes you have lost everything unless the info can be dug out of your Profile. Never work with original files.

As per previous post.

There is no Cloud nor Time Machine. Mozilla does not keep your info as respecting your privacy. Time Machine is a OS thing in Mac and is for the OS just as System Restore in Microsoft is for the OS and will not restore Firefox. You can always try it though as I am not that educated on Mac specifics.

As we are Volunteer Support we can not make or change things to do with Firefox. But you can have your say : To submit suggestions for new or changed features, may I suggest: Feedback: https://qsurvey.mozilla.com/s3/FirefoxInput/

So the in previous post the backup info URL's and Session Manger maybe of use.

Did you create a Firefox Account and set up Sync? If not, then your session history was private to your machine and not copied to Mozilla's servers.

Speaking of Time Machine, if your Mac makes backups of the contents of your sessionstore-backups folder, that might be useful to check if my earlier suggestions don't get you a recent enough file.

jscher2000 and Pkshadow,

I checked my Time Machine and it did not possess any files containing "sessionstore-backups" in their titles. And the "Firefox" icon/application inside Time Machine does not open/function on its own. But when it is reconnected to Firefox online the CURRENT SYSTEM overrides the "past" in less than half a second, at start-up.

It looks like Pkshadow is right, in saying that there is no fast way to retrieve non-Bookmarked sites/tabs.

MANUAL restoration is the ONLY OPTION LEFT.

What is LOST and NOT LOCATED within my History file is lost to me FOREVER!

Pkshadow and jscher2000, thank you for attempting to remedy this unfortunate event, caused by Firefox's Version 59.0.2 upgrade.

Goodbye,

I don't know if you should give up now, but I have nothing to add to my previous suggestions about where to look for session history files.

Regarding Time Machine, another user said that when you open a folder in Finder, there may be a Time Machine menu that shows what you had in that folder before. So if you open the sessionstore-backups folder (using the steps in an earlier post), then you might see backups specific those files. However, I rarely use a Mac and can't check it for myself.
