I have not been able to get to my Email for three days now. Every time I click on the Mazilla/Firefox icon, the search engine ASK comes up and I can't get rid of it. It has taken over as my search engine and won't let me get to Firefox and my Email! My windows home page doesn't come up at all, nothing is working as it did!!! What's going on? How do I fix it?

Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control>(Mac:<Command>)<Shift> A)

In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Remove Ask Anything. Now do the same in the computers Programs Folder.

Windows: Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs. Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. Linux: Check your user manual.

After the problem is fixed, Bookmark and use this; Download the Mozilla Search Reset {web link} This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets your search preferences and home page to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.

You may have ad / mal-ware. Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

Received private message,

Corly Today at 9:43 PM
while waiting for replies to my problem with ASK - I went to my 'start' icon, clicked on att.net and up popped Firefox and all my Emails! I can't explain it - other than the Lord answered my prayers - seems all is fine now. I have my Email back. I'm 87 next month, and not a computer geek, thank you for your information and trying to help. Corly FredMcD said

Two things to check;

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.
