My Firefox recently updated to version 40, other than that nothing else has been done to it. All of a sudden, when I open a new tab there is a message that says "this address is not valid". I used to have it open on www.google.com, so I decided to check the options to see if I need to reset my homepage. When I click on options it opens a new tab with the same "this address is not valid" message and that's it. I even tried going to the "Open Menu" and tried getting to options that way, and the same thing happened. I even tried restarting my browser and even my computer but it still does it. Like I said before, other than the automatic update recently nothing else has been changed. What's going on here?

Homepage and new tab are two different things.

You can easily set homepage from Options, but to set new tab website, you have to use about:config.

  1. Enter about:config in the address bar and accept the warning
  2. Find the line browser.newtab.url and check the value
  3. If the URL is wrong, double-click on it and replace it with the URL of the website you want on the new tabs
  4. Click on OK and close the tab

Note The pref browser.newtab.url won't work anymore from Firefox 41.

This is for security reasons: too much add-ons and malware were using this feature to set their own new tab URL.

Next you will have to use this add-on: New Tab Override. When the add-on is installed, open about:config, find the pref extensions.newtaboverride@agenedia.com.url and change the value to the URL you want.

Foxfire 42 seems to be functioning normally with one exception: Whenever I select Menu > Options the following message appears:

"This address is not valid" Consequently I cannot use any of the Options. Thus far no other action seems to elicit this message.

Hi mikesan, do you use any themes or extensions that modify how built-in pages work in Firefox?

If not, your program files might have become damaged in your last update. For that, we suggest:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent, corrupted, or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 42.0 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename just the current program folder, either:

(64-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

(32-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Does Firefox work more normally?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \OldFirefox\Plugins
  • \OldFirefox\browser\plugins

Otherwise, there's no reason to keep the old folder except research/curiosity.
