I have always used click to play. now it has stopped working universaly. I have checked my setting in about:config and click to play is still true. I remember this happened last year and the fix was simple but I can not remember how.

Could you describe the problem in more detail? For example:

  • the media just starts automatically without waiting for you to click
  • Firefox doesn't display a link or notification icon you can use to enable the media
  • you click to enable and it doesn't work

If the problem is with videos, it could be that the site is using the built-in HTML5 video player instead of a plugin, and click-to-play is a setting for plugins that does not apply to the built-in video player. But there might be another solution for that.

I should mention that individual plugins have their own click-to-play setting, which is called "Ask to Activate". This probably overrides the global setting.

You can check that the plugins you want to control have that set on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins.

You can set plugins to "Ask to Activate" on the "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Plugins" page.

You can get a Lego block icon on the left end of the location bar that indicates that Firefox is blocking a plugin.

It is only you tube. Some how I may have accidentally click always enable. Last time this happened the was a place to go to fix it on the you tube page but I cannot remember how I did it.

Oh, YouTube now defaults to using the built-in HTML5 video player instead of using a plugin. You might be able to opt out of that if you like using this page:

https://www.youtube.com/html5

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/flash-control/ Controls both Flash and HTML5 Media (Audio & Video). Simply click the "V" that appears over the element and it will play.

This only stops it from playing on the screen. I still is loading. I do not even want it to load.

I looked on this page and saw nowhere to opt out

You need to spoof the user agent to Firefox 36 to get the button on the YouTube page to be able to select the Flash based player as the default.

YouTube is handling its video feed a bit differently from other sites. Once I have opened a video from there in one tab, if I select another video for that same tab, it will start playing immediately. If I open a video page in another tab, it will not start playing until I clear the click-to-play placeholder. I set Firefox to treat click-to-play per element instead of per site by changing settings in about:config: plugin.persistentPermissionAlways.intervalInDays = 0 plugin.sessionPermissionNow.intervalInMinutes = 0

Yes, this page changed recently! To control whether YouTube uses HTML5 or Flash, you probably need to use the extension mentioned by cor-el.

I used the youtube flash player the Corel suggested but now the video does not play at all. But then I can select html 5 if i want to watch. I guess this will work for now.
