That's all except it has popped up twice just getting to this page from two pages back. I click the X and it is gone but comes back at the next webpage request.

I found it. I had seen an odd program of "free file converter" in my control panel-programs. I happened to notice that one of the popups had a banner that advertised a free file converter and had the same icon as the one I had seen. I went to my computer program section and did an uninstall. I did not want to uninstall and then tryed to take me to their webpage. I X'ed the page before it got far and clicked finish on the uninstaller. The problem has not shown up since. I have no idea how the file got there.

... then wants to install a binary file from air software?

Can you explain that in more detail? A screenshot would possibly help.

In general, get Firefox from mozilla.com only.

Sounds like Malware.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Whenever you get a message / popup that software / files need to be updated;

DO NOT USE ANY OF THE PROVIDED LINKS

While this may be a legitimate message, it could also be Malware or a Virus. Any time you want or need to check for upgrades, go to the web site of the True Owner of the program in question. For example, to check out Firefox, go to Mozilla.org. {web link}

You can sent a report to The FBI via their web site Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) {web link}

You can also report such a site at; Google Report Phishing Page {web link} which is the same when done while on site by going to Help > Report Web Forgery

I am currently running and have been for the last 5 years, Norton 360. I tryed the microsoft safety scanner and it ran all night. It said it found one file infected and then toke care of it. I clicked finish and rebooted. I clicked open Firefox and on the second click I got a page that offers a free credit score from FreeScore. I X'ed that out and then clicked on something to type and got the page that says "new version available". I have a screen shot of it as a .ppt but this won't let me paste it in. How do I get rid it?????

How many scan programs have you run?

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

avram, Thanks for your last reply, where you wrote that you solved the problem by uninstalling a "free file converter" program from your Windows Control Panel programs list. I marked your last reply as the solution.
