with control T, how to open a new browser tab near the active one

actually, the new browser tab is opened at the end of the browser tab list. Firefox version used is 3.6.8. I think there is an option to configure that. But i did not find it.

There's a few extensions that have a preference for that, but it's not built into the basic Firefox build.
