Firefox Quantum (58) using much more CPU than 52

Hello!

My usual working set of tabs (for research) includes 4-5 Google Docs windows, 2 Gmail windows, several Google Maps windows, and 10-12 other tabs.

I also have Tree Style Tab installed.

System: MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.

Firefox 52 can cope with this workload without using more than 40% CPU (as shown by Activity Monitor). The result is that my laptop fan hardly ever comes on and the laptop remains cool.

Firefox Quantum (57 and 58), however, constantly uses about 80-90% CPU for the same set of tabs. My laptop fan is constantly on and the laptop gets very hot.

As a result, I have had to downgrade to 52.

Can anyone help me find the source of this problem? I have tried uninstalling Tree Style Tab (and all other extensions) and refreshing my profile, but the same behaviour still occurs.

Is this simply a tradeoff that's designed into Quantum - is it faster, but at the expense of CPU load?

Thanks

Louise

Hi,

It looks like it's a known bug and it's being worked on

As a workaround you can try changing your theme from Default to one of either Light or Dark.
