Was running Firefox 50.something, and was offered 51.0.1 via Help / About. Pressed the button in that dialog to upgrade.

Now Firefox won't start -- it brings up the Mozilla Crash Reporter dialog. Pressing "Restart Firefox" from that just brings it up again.

Starting with profile manager ("firefox.exe -P") and creating a fresh profile doesn't help (the "Firefox - Choose User Profile" dialog works, but "Start Firefox" just crashes).

Starting in safe mode (as it occasionally offers me, or with "firefox.exe -safe-mode"

(Thus, I haven't tried the irreversible-sounding "Refresh Firefox" option, as I think the above steps imply that it is unlikely to help.)

Crash IDs (all submitted today by me, in chronological order): bp-e1156367-12d1-42af-b90e-b0fe22170127 bp-d90c6dcd-f9ed-4c6d-a6e9-5f5302170127 bp-5eae3f6e-e3f5-490b-afc7-edc312170127

At least one colleague at the same site is suffering a similar problem. This is a corporate site; it's possible https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/websense-startup-crashes-firefox applies; I'm not sure how to tell whether that version of Websense is installed.

hi roadworthy, thanks for providing your crash ids - yes, unfortunately it is an old version of websense on your system that is hooking into firefox and crashing the browser. you'll need to at least update forcepoint/websense endpoint to version 8.2.5 (or work with your it department to do that).
