There are several possibilities.

  1. it may be that your configuration setup is wrong, causing the error
  2. or it may be that the account requires an 'app' password, such as Gmail requires.
  3. it might be timing issue. (I always suggest NOT entering password during setup until the account prompts for it)
  4. or it sometimes happens when users enter only part of their email id, omitting the @ and all to the right of it.
