I've noticed there is a "verified by Amazon" icon in my address bar next to the FF shield. How did it get there, can, or should, I remove it and how. I don't trust anything Amazon does, so if possible I would like it to be gone.

Hi

Do you have any add-ons installed in Firefox?

It is a certificate info. That certificate has been verified by Amazon.

This is a very important info and you shouldn't remove it.

It's on every page. Amazon is verifying all certificates now?

Hmmm... what do you see on https://twitter.com ?

Can you attach a screenshot?

Are you using a proxy or VPN?

You can check the connection settings.

  • Settings -> General -> Network: Connection -> Settings

If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then try to select "No Proxy" if "Use the system proxy settings" or one of the others do not work properly.

See "Firefox connection settings":

The lock icon hover tooltip and drop-down report data from the certificate sent by the web server which sent the page. You can reach the certificates with a few clicks as shown in the attachment.
