On launch a second tab opens to Google page
On Oct. 29, 2017 Win10 64 Firefox 56.02 Today FF began opening a second tab with Google. The start configuration is set to blank page and home page is another URL. Doesn't happen in safe mode. I can find nothing in the normal config to account for this. I even removed Google from the search engines list. I am baffled. Thanks for any help.

Type about:config<enter> in the address bar. If a warning screen comes up, press the I Accept the Risk button. At the top of the screen is a search bar. Type browser.startup.homepage
What is the value? Right-click and select Reset to restore its default value; about:home
Note that you can also check the home page via the Options/Preferences pages.
- Options/Preferences -> General -> Startup: Home page
Note that Firefox supports multiple home pages separated by '|' (pipe) symbols.
You might also check the shortcut you use to start Firefox. Here's how:
The Firefox icon can be set up to launch specific pages at startup (or more specifically, when you use the icon). To check whether that is set:
First, open the shortcut as follows:
- Desktop shortcut: right-click the icon, choose Properties
- Pinned taskbar icon: right-click the icon, right-click Mozilla Firefox, choose Properties
Windows normally will select the Shortcut tab. If not, go ahead and click the Shortcut tab.
You'll see the Target highlighted. On 64-bit Windows, that usually is no more and no less than the following (32-bit/64-bit):
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
If anything follows after that, try clearing it out.
After OK'ing the Properties dialog, you can test right away to confirm that Firefox now launches only your home page. Either:
- double-click desktop shortcut
- right-click pinned taskbar icon, click Mozilla Firefox
Success?
