Firefox crashes facebook, tumblr and youtube several times a day having to reset firefox atleast once a day

I will be surfing on the websites stated in the question and all of a sudden, the page will go all wonky and even if i refresh, close the window and reopen or even restart the computer it will still be unable to be used and it's like a plugin is missing and nothing can be clicked and its rendered unusable. It happens multiple times a day and the only fix is to reset firefox which gets really annoying after a while.

When you say reset Firefox, do you mean this? If not, I recommend following those steps.

I do this, several times a day. it's only a temporary fix.

Most people only need to do a reset once or twice ever. I wonder if doing that many resets has contributed to the problem.

Maybe someone more experienced with this can share their thoughts...

It's the fix i found online first for the problem. I'm hoping someone can help me find a permanent solution.

You can first try some basic steps like these before doing a reset:

Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • Press and hold Shift and left-click the Reload button.
  • Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • Press "Command + Shift + R" (MAC)

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Did Firefox actually crash or do you only have a problem with accessing those websites?

If you have submitted crash reports then please post the IDs of one or more crash reports that have this format:

  • bp-xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx

You can find the IDs of the submitted crash reports on the about:crashes page.

  • You can open the about:crashes page via the location bar, like you open a website.

When I receive the "Firefox has updated, restart your computer" messages, there is no option to say, "No." Usually this is not a problem. Until the latest. I am on Safari at the moment, because every stinking time I go on Facebook using Firefox, I get the Spinning Beachball of Death, have to force quit Firefox, and start again via Safari. I'm certain the Mozilla elves are working feverishly 'cause I'll bet I'm not alone.

I have this exact problem. I have tried other solutions but the only thing that works is a reset of Firefox. Mine is a daily occurrence. Doe it happen with Chrome? If not, I'm tempted to switch though I love Firefox.

Crossman, do you also reset Firefox often? Most users should only need to do this once or twice ever, so if you have been doing this often it could have contributed to the problem.

Resetting firefox often isn't going to make this happen. If you are getting a crash, please give us the crash id so then we can diagnose the crash instead of stabbing in the dark.


  1. Enter about:crashes in the Firefox location bar (that's where you enter your website names) and press Enter. You should now see a list of submitted crash reports.
  2. Copy the most recent 5 report IDs that you see in the crash report window and paste them into your forum response.

Well, due to the spinning beachball of death, there is technically no crash, per se. Hence, no reports. I really dislike Safari, and I hope Mozilla fixes the bug on their end. This is a first. BTW - don't know about you, but lengthy workarounds are not an acceptable alternative. This feels like "tech support" where someone far far away is reading from a script and asking me to start by making sure my computer is "connected." Imagine steam coming out of my ears. It's always the user, never the app/GUI/software devs' prob.

I don't know what you mean by lengthy workarounds, we've barely gotten information from you on what the problem is.

Try some of the Basic troubleshooting found at Troubleshoot and diagnose Firefox problems (sorry but this is a very vague problem, there is no magic bullet right now, but more of a shotgun approach until we figure out the cause)

Did you already install new extensions in the new profile when those crashes occur?

No one need to respond to this. Last night, I was with a sizable group, all of whom were talking about the Firefox frustration. To a man and a woman, all VERY tech savvy, they are in the process of bailing on Mozilla and downloading and using Chrome. I have yet to do this, but plan on it. Problem solved.

You can check for problems caused by recent Flash updates and try these:

  • disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
  • disable protected mode in Flash 11.3 and later
  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

I have to reset it if I want to watch youtube / use facebook links etc. I have to do it daily and it isn't contributing to the problem. The problem was already there. I have checked all the java script and everything in options, all checked.

Seems to be an issue with Mozilla and Windows 8. I was chatting to a friend of mine over the weekend. Apparently he had had exactly the same issue and is now on Chrome with no problems.

Hopefully Mozilla will investigate this bug otherwise I will also have to go to Chrome, which I don't really want to.

I only appear to have two:

It doesn't 'crash' it makes Facebook, Wikipedia and all the other websites look weird, no ability to follow links etc.

For example, on a forum I use regularly, the icons for all the bbcode operations are gone. When I reset Firefox, they are back. It is frustrating to say the least.

Finally, the pages take longer to load in the 'Drunk Firefox' version, as my name for it is.

Make sure that you haven't enabled a High Contrast theme in the Windows Accessibility settings and that you allow pages to choose their colors in Firefox.

checked the colours and the contrast all as it should have been so it wasn't that unfortunately.

Can you attach a screenshot?

Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot.


Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

So it turns out there was a bug in Firefox 17 and Firefox 18 that caused Facebook to crash for a large number of users. See the article about this for more information.
